How old must I be to rent a car?

The minimum age for renting a car depends very much on the car rental company, on the destination and on the car category you wish to rent. The exact regulations for age limits are noted in the respective car rental companies terms & conditions, which you can click on per offer during the booking process. Please note that several car rental companies impose a Young Driver Surcharge which can vary for the different ages between 21 and 24 years. In some destinations and with some suppliers you can even rent a car from the age of 19 onwards but again, with an extra Young Driver Surcharge to be paid locally.

Is there a maximum age limit for renting cars?

Some car rental companies either impose a maximum age or require a doctors certificate from a certain age onward. If applicable, detailed rules can be found in the respective suppliers terms & conditions during the booking process.

How are the rental prices being calculated?

Rental prices are being calculated on a 24-hours basis starting with pick up time and not by calendar day. This means that you should return your rental car the latest at the same time as when you have picked it up. If you return the car late, the car rental supplier can and will charge extra hours or extra days at locally applicable rates.

Do the rental prices always include unlimited free kilometers/miles?

No, rental prcies do not always include unlimited free kilometers or miles. Although with most car rental companies in most destinations there is an unlimited allowance, there are exceptions primarily for domestic rentals, for certain one-way rentals and/or for certain car categories. Details are clearly stated with the inclusions of an offer during the booking process.

Will there be charges for additionally driven kilometers/miles?

If you have chosen an offer with limited free kilometers/miles any extra kilometer/mile driven during the rental period will be charged directly by the car rental company upon return of the rental car. The rate per kilometer/mile varies by car category and is clearly indicated in the inclusions of any offer.

What kind of fuel policies do you have?

The standard fuel policy is the so-called full-to-full which means that you receive the rental car with a full tank of fuel and you need to return it with a full tank of fuel. A variation of this policy is that you receive the rental car with a certain fuel level eg 3/4 or 1/2 and you have to return it with the same level of fuel. With some of the offers on autobooker.com, the first tank of fuel is even included in the rental price so that you can return the car with an almost empty tank and will not be charged extra. Another option is the so-called fuel purchase option under which you can pay for the first tank of fuel at time of pick up and subsequently return the car with an almost empty tank.

Will I get exactly the car make and model which is being displayed on the internet?

Chances are high that you will not receive the exact make and model which has been displayed on the internet during the booking process. These are just examples for the car category. Car rental companies maintain large fleets with cars from different manufactures which is the main reason why only categories can be booked and confirmed, never specific makes or models.

Must I pay the fines for traffic violations locally?

Whenever you are aware of a traffic violation or when you are stopped by the local police you should always pay any fines immediately. Otherwise the local authorities will contact the car rental companies which will then give out your contact details and charge you for this service so that the authorities will be able to get in touch with you and collect the fines even after you have returned home.

Are rental cars equipped with radios, CD players, USB connections?

The majority of the rental cars are equipped with at least a radio and from fullsize car categories upwards most of the makes and models have a CD-player as well as USB-plugins, at least the newer models. But please be aware that such features can not be requested and not be reserved in advance.

Do I get frequent flyer miles or other bonus points for my booking with you?

No, as you have chosen to benefit from special low pre-booked and prepaid rates via autobooker.com we do not credit you with any frequent flyer miles or other bonus points. Nevertheless you should contact the car rental company directly or present your respective bonus card at time of pick up so the car rental company might log the miles/bonus points earned.

Are my personal data protected?

Yes, your personal data and your payment data are secure when booking with autobooker.com. Regarding your personal data please refer to the Data security & Privacy rules section within our booking engine. All payment data are encrypted via SSL Secure Socket Layer and are safe at any time during the transmission.

Reservations, bookings & payment

How can I book a specific car model?

Car rental companies maintain a fleet from several manufacturers with many different makes and models. Therefore, you cannot make a booking for a specific car model but only for a certain car category. Car categories are defined by size, number of doors, manual or automatic shift, air condition or not, and in some specific cases by the type of car convertible, minivan etc..

Can I rent a car without a credit card?

No, you cannot rent a car without a valid international credit card in the name of the renter. You need this credit card for payment to autobooker.com as well as for the security deposit at time of rent.

Which forms of payment are accepted?

Currently, credit cards are accepted as form of payment to autobooker.com. Please note that you also need a credit card in the name of the renter at time of pick up for the security deposit to the car rental company.

When do I have to pay for my booking?

Your credit card will be charged with the rental price at time of booking, as soon as the reservation is confirmed by us. This way, we are able to protect your confirmed car rental reservation with the supplier.

Can I make a last-minute booking for a same day pick up?

Yes, you can make a last-minute booking for renting the car at the same day. Nevertheless, the selection of available cars is restricted to immediately confirmable cars only. The risk of reserving an on request vehicle and then get it denied by the supplier is too high for a reliable service.

I have not received a car rental voucher yet?

If you have not received your car rental voucher yet, your reservation is either still on request or your payment failed. In these cases you will have received an email from us. Another possibility is that the email with the voucher in pdf format has been filtered out by your email programme and ended up in your spam folder, please check.

Why is my booking still on request?

Your booking can be on request either because the car rental supplier has not confirmed the availability for the chosen dates and the chosen vehicle category back to us or you have requested optional equipment child seats, GPS or sim. which is always on request with the car rental companies.

Why is my booking not confirmed yet?

Your booking is not confirmed yet because it is either still on request see above or your payment has failed. In any case, you will have received a corresponding email from us explaining the reason.

Why do I need to give you my flight details?

For pick ups at airport locations the car rental suppliers must have your flight information so that they are able to recognize flight delays and still hold your reservation at least during normal office opening hours. Furthermore, flight details are important for meet & greet location so that the local car rental representative knows when and where you will arrive.

How can I amend and/or cancel my booking?

You can cancel and/or amend your booking by sending us an email reservations@autobooker.com or by calling our reservations office +49 0 89 - 44 35 50 15 01. When cancelling, we are very interested in the reason why you are cancelling as this helps to improve our service.

What is your booking amendment and cancellation policy?

You can cancel your booking at any time up to 48 hours prior to the originally reserved pick up time for free. If you cancel within 48 hours prior to pick up time or if you cancel a last-minute booking within the same time frame, we will charge you 10% of the originally paid rental price with a minimum of €50. Amendments are free of charge but depend on availability at time of amendment and as well the applicable rental price at time of amendment will be charged. Please be informed that changes of the renters name, the pick up/return locations and the car category are not considered as amendments but as totally new bookings.

Can I change my booking at time of rent or even after I have picked up the car?

Yes, depending on availability you can still change the duration of your booking at time of rent but you need to take into consideration that there will be no refund from autobooker.com for shortened rentals and that locally applicable rates will be charged by the car rental company directly for extended durations. Please be informed that changes of the renters name, the pick up/return locations and the car category are not considered as amendments but as totally new bookings.

Can I pick up the rental car outside of normal station opening hours?

Yes, but at selected locations with selected car rental companies only. You need to request this at time of booking so we can pass on your request to the local provider. Please note that there will be an additional fee if confirmed which we will advise upon at time of confirmation.

Can I get the rental car delivered to / collected from a hotel?

No, currently autobooker.com and our contracted car rental companies do not offer this service.

Insurances

What is the coverage amount of the third party liability insurance?

Coverage amounts for liability insurances are at a minimum of the destinations legally mandatory amounts, in most cases and with most suppliers considerably higher than these. In the rare cases where such amounts are rather low compared to your home countrys regulations, we recommend to book with our quality supplier Sunny Cars. Sunny Cars guarantees a minimum coverage of € 7.5 million.

What does CDW mean?

CDW stands for Collision Damage Waiver. CDW is always included in the car rental price and relieves you from the responsiblity for the total value of the rental car in case of damages - as long as you have used the car according to the terms & conditions as laid out in the rental agreement. CDW always includes an excess amount which you will be responsible for.

What does TP mean?

TP stands for Theft Protection. TP is always included in the car rental price and relieves you from the responsiblity for the total value of the rental car in case it gets stolen - as long as you have not violated the terms & conditions of the rental agreement or acted severely negligent eg loss of car keys. TP always includes an excess amount which you will be responsible for.

What is an excess?

An excess is also known as deductible and means the maximum amount which you will be responsible for and have to pay in case of damages to or theft of the rental car. These excess amounts apply only as long as you have used the rental car according to the terms & conditions of the rental agreement and if you have not acted with severe negligence or even willfully.

Do I need additional insurances?

autobooker.com is not in a position to recommend for or against additional insurances but you should check which instances might be covered by your credit card, by your health insurance or by any travel insurance you might have. At time of rent, car rental companies will offer additional insurances like PAI personal accident insurance, PEC personal effects coverage, GAT glass & tires protection, extended roadside assistance and many more. It is completely your decision if you want such additional protection but once purchased/signed on the rental agreement no refund is possible should you find out that the protection was not needed.

Are my personal belongings including any luggage insured while in the rental vehicle?

Without any extra insurance which you might carry anyway pls. check, any personal belongings luggage etc. are not insured while in the rental car.

Additional extras & optional equipment

How do I reserve optional equipment?

During the booking process at time of reservation you will get a selection of optional equipment which can be requested with the car rental company. This list will also include the rental price for the optional equipment in destination currency and - once confirmed by the supplier - which you will have to pay locally.

Is special equipment like child seats, roof racks, GPS etc. available at all locations for all car groups?

Optional equipment is not available at all destinations for all car groups but can be requested. Understandably roof racks will not be available for convertibles and other special cars, the number of child seats will be restricted to the number of seats in the rental car and not all car rental companies rent out GPS at all locations.

Do I need to request winter tires separately?

If winter tires are legally mandatory in the country where you pick up the car then you do not have to request these separately. For destinations where the traffic regulations do not mandatorily require winter tires or are somewhat vague, please check the individual offer if winter tires and winterization fees are included or excluded. In case winter tires are not included, you need to request them separately as optional equipment.

Are there any extra fees for winter tires?

As long as traffic regulations of the renting country do not require winter tires mandatorily and/or as long as you are requesting winter tires as optional equipment you will have to pay for these locally to the car rental company.

Are any local highway/road/bridge/city congestion tolls included in the rental price?

With a few exceptions, any tolls and road fees applicable in the destination country are NOT included in the rental price. Exceptions include but are not limited to environmental stickers for rental cars in Germany or highway toll stickers for rental cars in Switzerland. Fees which will be charged locally include but are not limited to city congestion fees in London, Stockholm etc. and highway fees in Portugal, Hungary, North America etc.

One-way rentals & driving restrictions

Can I pick up the car at one location and return it to another one?

Yes, you can but you should already make your reservation accordingly during the booking process. Please be aware that not all car rental companies in all destinations permit one-way rentals with all of their car categories. Please also be aware that one-way rentals more often than not will incur a one-way which must be paid locally to the car rental company. You are being informed about the respective amount during the booking process and on the car rental voucher. International one-way rentals are NOT available with autobooker.com

Are there any additional charges for one-way rentals?

Yes, in most cases car rental companies charge extra one-way fees even for domestic one-way rentals. Very often one-way fees vary depending on the rental duration, the distance between pick up and drop off location and if only different locations in the same city or even different cities are concerned.

Are there any driving restrictions with my rental car?

Yes, there are driving restrictions: it is not permitted to drive the rental car offroad or on unpaved or gravel roads, not on beaches and in some destinations eg USA, Canada, Australia on certain named roads and highways.

Can I take my rental car outside of the renting country?

If you are planning to cross the border from the renting into another country you should request this already at time of booking. The car rental company might charge an extra fee for cross-border travel, or requires that you take out an extra insurance or applies a higher excess in case of damages to / theft of the rental car while travelling in another country.

Can I take my rental car on a ferry?

Normally, car rental companies do not allow their vehicles to be taken on a ferry. If, in exceptional cases this is allowed, please be aware that while on the ferry any insurances provided by the car rental company are nullified.

Pick up & return of the rental car

Which documents do I need to present at time of rent?

When you pick up your car at the car rental companys location you need to present the following documents: 1.your passport or - in case of a domestic rental in your country of residence/citizenship - a legally recogenized personal ID, 2. your valid national driver license, held for at least one year exceptions with longer durations may apply, pls. check terms & conditions of your booking, 3. your valid international credit card for the security deposit and possible extra charges, 4. your car rental voucher.

Do I need an International Driving Permit IDP?

You need an International Driving Permit IDP in addition to your driver license when you valid national driver license is not or not completely printed in the Roman alphabet. Furthermore, in some countries with some car rental companies you need to present an IDP in addition to your valid national driver license because of national traffic regulations in the destination country. Information can be requested with your automobile club.

Why do I have to sign a rental agreement with the car rental company at the destination?

You must sign a rental agreement at time of pick up because the actual rental contract is between you as a customer and the car rental company as a lessor of the vehicle. The terms and conditions of such a rental agreement are binding to both parties.

In which languages will the rental agreement be available?

Because rental agreements are legal documents under the legislation of the renting country the agreements are in the countrys respective official language and - in the majority of destinations - also in English. Many car rental companies in several touristic destinations are making translations available at time of rent into the most common international languages.

Do the representatives of the car rental company at the destination speak my language?

Car rental companies, especially in touristic areas make an effort to employ multi-lingual staff. Apart from their native language the majority of representatives will have some knowledge of English and - depending on the destination - also of French, German and/or Dutch.

Why does the car rental company take a deposit?

The car rental company lets an object to you which is worth several thousands of Euros or Dollars. And in order to protect the possible charge of an excess in case of damage to / theft of the rental car as well as any locally applicable charges for fuel, optional equipment, one-way fees etc. the car rental company requires the security deposit.

How do I make the security deposit at time of rent and how much will it be?

The security deposit takes place as either a block on or a charge from your valid international credit card account. Please note that debit cards eg Maestro, Visa Electron, Carte Bleue, prepaid credit cards and cash deposits are NOT accepted. The blocked or charged amount is refunded to your account minus any locally applicable charges within a few days under the condition that you return the rental car in the same condition as at pick up time. The amount of the security deposit generally consists of the excess amount + the value of a tank of fuel + any extra charges eg optional equipment, additional driver fees + locally applicable tax & fees.

Which additional charges could apply at time of rent?

Additional charges which you have to pay locally to the car rental company could include unless not included in the rental price in the first place additional driver fees, refuelling fees, extra insurance charges, fees for optional equipment, onw-way fees etc.

What type of car will I get from the car rental company?

You will receive a car in the booked and paid for car category. The car make and model showed at time of booking is only an example. The car rental company reserves the right to provide a similar model in the same category or - if not available due to unforeseen circumstances - a car of a higher category at no extra cost.

What do I do if I find at time of rent that the booked rental car is too small?

When at time of rent you find out that your passengers or your luggage does not fit in the originally reserved car, you can ask the representative of the car rental company for an upgrade. But please be aware that such upgrades are being charged for directly by the car rental company at locally applicable rates which are considerably higher than the prepaid rental price.

Are other people allowed to drive the car which I am renting?

Additional drivers must be registered in the rental agreement, must be present at time of pick up and must fulfill the same requirements as the renter minimum/maximum age, passport/personal ID, driver license etc.. If anyone who is not registered in the rental agreement drives the rental vehicle, all insurances will be void.

What shall I do before driving away from the rental location?

Before driving away from the renting locations make sure that you are familiar with the features of the rental car, inspect the car for any existing damages and have these logged with the local representative in the check-out document, control if the fuel level corresponds to the one logged on the rental agreement and already check where you will have to return the car at the end of your rental.

Can I return my rental car outside of normal station opening hours?

At time of pick up you can make arrangements with the car rental companys representative to return the car outside of the station opening hours provided that the return location has a post / drop box for the documents and the car keys. Please be aware that you will still be responsible for any damages to / theft of the rental vehicle until the location opens next.

Do I need to clean the rental car before returning it to the car rental company?

Normally not! Only if you have carried half of the beach into the rental car you should clean out the sand. And if your favourite pet has left lots of hairs on the back seats you better vacuum clean it before returning the car. If the interior of the rental car is dirtier than after normal use, car rental companies can have it cleaned at the renters cost.

What shall I do before returning the car to the rental location?

Before you return the rental car to the location make sure that you have filled up the tank unless you have pre-purchased it with the car rental company or it was included in your rental price. Should you have any new damages you need to report these and also take some photos in case of later disputes.

What do I need to do if I am going to be late for picking up the rental car?

If you are going to be late by less than 1 hour you normally do not have to do anything as such a time frame is within the grace period of most car rental companies. Nevertheless, in high season and/or if you have reserved a special car please phone ahead and let the car rental company know. For pick up at airport location you will have informed us and the car rental company of your flight details so that any flight delays should be recognized as long as you will still arrive during location opening hours.

Accidents, damages & theft

Which damages are covered and which are not?

The included liability insurance covers all property damages and bodily injuries to third parties up to a maximum amount at least the legally mandatory one of the destination country unless you have violated the terms and conditions of the rental agreement wilfullness, severe negligence, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs etc.. Damages to / theft of the rental car are covered by CDW and TP see insurance section, normally with an excess.

What do I need to do when I have a new damage on the rental car?

When a third party is involved and even if only property is/could be damaged you must call the police and get a police report. Take photos and write up a description of how the damage happened. When you return the rental car to the location you have to log the damage on the check-in report.

Will I be held liable for small damages like scratches?

Yes, you will be held liable for every new damage which has not been pre-existing at time of pick up. Even small scratches can cause expensive repairs at a body shop or new paint.

What do I do in case of an accident with the rental car?

When you have an accident with the rental car you must report it to the local police and call the car rental company immediately. Please make sure you follow their instructions and please make sure you get handed out a police report, depending on the severance of the accident.

What do I need to do if the rental car gets stolen?

When the rental car gets stolen you must report it to the local police and call the car rental company immediately. Please make sure you follow their instructions and please make sure you get handed out a police report. Keep the car keys until you can give them back to a representative of the car rental company.

Am I covered if an accident or a damage is caused by severe negligence?

No, normally you are not covered by any insurance or protection package if you caused an accident or the theft of the rental car by your own severe negligence. Although the interpretation of severe negligence is different in every country, frequent offenses in this category include but are not limited to speeding, ignoring a stop sign or a red light and/or leaving the car keys unattended theft.

What is considered as severe negligence when causing an accident or a damage?

Severe negligence for causing an accident or a damage includes but is not limited to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, speeding, ignoring or overseeing a stop sign or a red light and/or leaving the car keys unattended.

After the rental

What do I do if I have any queries after the rental?

For any queries after the rental has been completed ie after you have returned the rental car at the location, you should contact the car rental company directly. Contact details are normally noted on the rental agreement or can be retrieved from the car rental companys website. You can also contact autobooker.com customercare@autobooker.com and we will be happy to provide you with the relevant contact details of the supplier.

Which documents should I keep and for how long?

After having returned the rental car you should keep the following documents on file at least until you have received your next credit card statement in order to be able to cross-check any charges: copy of car rental voucher, rental agreement, check-out and check-in reports from the car rental company, receipt from the last refuelling, final invoice from the car rental company and any documents related to possible damages or accidents.

How do I file a complaint?

If your car rental experience was not satisfying to you and you wish to file a complaint you can do so via email or directly on the car rental companys website. Please always include rental agreement number and details. Alternately you can also send an email to autobooker.com customercare@autobooker.com and we will either have an immediate answer/explanation for you or will pass on your complaint to the car rental company requesting a direct response.

Do you refund any money if I pick up the car later or return it earlier?

No, neither the car rental company nor autobooker.com are refunding any money for shortened rentals. As you have benefitted from lower fully prepaid rates, no refunds can be made after the original pick up time.
